COVID-19 UPDATE

Per Governor Northam's orders to stay-at-home and practice social-distancing, the DMV Connect services will not be at City Hall in April, May, or June. The city offers two options for conducting business with the DMV. See below for the services offered by the DMV 2 Go bus and the DMV Connect.

DMV 2 Go Full-Service Bus


The handicapped-accessible, full-service office provides all DMV transactions including:
  • Applying for and renewing driver's licenses
  • Obtaining ID cards (including photos) and Virginia's veterans ID cards
  • Taking road and knowledge tests
  • Obtaining copies of driving records
  • Obtaining vehicle titles, license plates, and transcripts
  • Ordering disabled parking placards or plates
  • Updating an address after a move for DMV and voter registration
  • and much more.
Customers should be prepared with the required documents to complete transactions. Open to all Virginia residents. No appointments are necessary.

DMV Connect: Limited Services Available


Most services are available at the DMV Connect:
  • Applying for and renewing driver's licenses
  • Obtaining ID cards (including photos) and Virginia's veterans ID cards
  • Ordering disabled parking placards or plates
  • Obtaining vehicle titles, license plates, and transcripts
  • Purchasing E-Z Pass transponders
  • Compliance summaries

These events are always from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and held in the Laurel Room in City Hall, which is located in Lower Center, East Wing of the newly renovated building

REAL ID Services Available 

Both the DMV 2 Go Bus and DMV Connect offer REAL ID services. 

REAL ID Deadline Extended to October 2021

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Federal Government has extended the deadline for Virginia residents to obtain a REAL ID to October 2021. More information on the DMV’s website.

How do I apply for a REAL ID compliant license or ID card?

  • All applicants for a REAL ID compliant license or ID card, including current Virginia credential holders, must apply in-person and provide DMV with physical documentation of:
  • Identity (e.g. unexpired U.S. passport or U.S. birth certificate)
  • Legal Presence (e.g. unexpired U.S. passport or U.S. birth certificate)
  • Social Security Number (must include full number; e.g. Social Security card or W-2 form)
  • Residency (two proofs are required and each must include current residential street address; e.g. current driver’s license, utility bills, mortgage statement or rental lease agreement)
  • Proof of any name changes (e.g. marriage certificates or divorce decrees)
