Status
In-Progress (Summer 2021)
The project is in the Right-of-Way (ROW) and easement acquisition phase. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022.
About the Project
The intersection of North Washington Street and Columbia Street was identified as one of four City intersections needing improvements as part of the application process for Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for FY 15 Revenue Sharing funds. The main reason these were identified for upgrades was to remove signal heads and span wires from Dominion Virginia Power (DVP) utility poles. City Council approved this project as part of the FY 2015-2019 CIP under the Traffic Signals Infrastructure Program.
Work at this intersection will include removal of existing signal heads and video detection from Dominion Virginia Power poles and will install new signal equipment including decorative traffic signal poles, pedestrian signals, and a new cabinet. Signage and pavement markings will be replaced as needed, including new high-visibility crosswalks. This project will improve pedestrian accessibility by updating signal timing, providing ADA-compliant crossings, and installing pedestrian-scale lightning.
