The City of Falls Church is pleased to announce a new curbside food waste collection service - one of the first such programs in Virginia. All City residents receiving curbside solid waste services are eligible to sign-up for this voluntary, pilot program, which starts on August 2, 2017.
The curbside food waste collection program will operate similarly to curbside recycling and trash pick-ups. Participants are provided an air-tight collection bin and compostable liners. Every week, the Compost Crew, the contractor who collects the food waste, will empty and clean the bin, replace the compostable liner, and transport the food waste to a composting facility where it is turned into a high-quality soil amendment. Participants will receive free finished compost each spring.
The cost for this program is $6 per month or $66 per year. There is a one-time fee of $10 to cover the setup and bin. The City is proud to offer this competitive rate to our citizens, as comparable programs in neighboring jurisdictions charge $30 per month for a similar service. To celebrate the launch of the program, the first 600 residents who sign-up for the program will receive six months of free service.
Residents interested in signing up may do so on The Compost Crew’s website: http://compostcrew.com/fallschurch/.
In addition to the curbside program, citizens may also drop off compost for free at any time at the City’s Food Waste Drop-Off Center, located at the back of City Hall and Community Center parking lot (300 Park Ave.) in a fenced enclosure next to the tennis courts. This service is free and open to anyone who lives and works in our community. Learn more about all compost services provided by the City by visiting www.fallschurchva.gov/compost.
