On Monday, February 17, the library will close for 2-3 weeks in order to move to the temporary location (on 601 S. Oak St.) we'll be using during the library expansion and renovation.
Library Closing February 17 Through Early March While We Move to Our Temporary Location at 601 S. Oak Street
At their February 10 meeting, City Council approved the funding and the construction contract for the Mary Riley Styles Public Library’s renovation and expansion project. As a result, the library building at 120 N. Virginia will be closed starting Monday, February 17 for packing, moving, and setting up the temporary location. The Library will reopen in early to mid-March at the trailers at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School (601 S. Oak Street).
Parking at 601 S. Oak St.
Visitors may park on the street by the temporary location while minding the posted street signs. Visitors should be mindful of the surrounding neighborhood and respect private property.
Hours at 601 S. Oak St.
The operating hours at the temporary location will be slightly revised to accommodate the school’s schedule: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Available Collection & Services at 601 S. Oak St.
The temporary location will host a good selection of books, periodicals, and other media. Programming like book discussion groups, ESL Conversation Groups, and storytime will continue, with some changes; visitors should check the temporary location webpage for exact details.
Due dates & Returning Items
All due dates for books and other media are extended into March. Once the temporary location opens, books may only be returned there (601. S. Oak Street). No books or media may be returned at the N. Virginia location, including the drive-through book drop, after February 28th.
Interlibrary Loans & Reserves
New interlibrary loan (ILL) requests are not accepted until the library opens in the temporary location (in early March). Starting February 11, patrons will not be able to place new holds until the temporary location opens in March. Previously placed holds will still be available for pick up at 120 N. Virginia Avenue until February 17. Holds will then not be available for pick-up until the temporary location opens.
The renovation and expansion project is scheduled to be complete in May 2021. When the building reopens, it will have more space and will be safer and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Visitor convenience will also be increased with all adult materials on the main level, and all children and teen materials on the lower level, allowing for better noise control for adults who prefer a quiet library experience.
