Recycling
Recycling Recycling is collected from curbside residential customers weekly on Wednesdays, year round (except on observed City holidays).
Recycling is convenient, it conserves energy and raw materials, and it saves the City more than $100,000 in disposal costs every year!
Set-out Requirements
Currently, residential customers use 18 gallon green recycling bins provided by the City, however, each curbside customer will receive a refuse and recycling cart in the fall of 2010. For more information please click here.
Residents may place recycling materials into personal containers as long as they are clearly marked "recycling" and are placed away from trash containers on collection day.
Place containers at the curb by 7 a.m. on Wednesday (or after 5 p.m. Tuesday evening). Containers must be returned to the side or rear of the residence by Wednesday evening.
New Curbside Recycling Program is Easier than Ever! The City of Falls Church implemented a "single-stream" recycling collection program in September 2008. Curbside customers may place ALL recycling items into the same recycling bin - no separation is necessary.
The City's collection contractor, American Disposal Services, collects recyclables using a rear-loading compactor truck (similar to a trash truck but with a recycling symbol on the side of the truck). This method of "single-stream" collection is more efficient and requires fewer trips to the recycling transfer facility. Most importantly, "single-stream" collection provides a user-friendly "one-bin" system for the customer.
Once collected, the City sells curbside recyclable materials to WM Recycle America, LLC, which accepts recyclables in a "single-stream." This means items arrive at the facility mixed together and the facility's highly advanced equipment separates the materials into appropriate recycling streams. This is fast becoming the industry standard for recycling. Partnering with WM Recycle America allows the City to offer our curbside customers the most diverse and extensive recycling program in the region.
Green bins are provided free to curbside customers but are the property of the City of Falls Church. If you need a new or replacement 18 gallon green recycling bin, please e-mail recycling2@fallschurchva.gov or call 703-248-5160 (TTY 711). If you plan to move, please leave clean bins for the next resident.
