Collection After Storms

July 8 Flood Clean-Up

Due to the historic nature of the July 8 floods, the City is waiving Special Bulk Collection fees for the next two weeks (July 10 and July 17 pickups).

Residents must still call to request a special collection - bulk items left curbside will not be picked up unless a resident calls to schedule a special collection. Only residential curbside customers receiving regular solid waste collections are eligible for special collection services.

To request a special collection, call the Solid Waste Hotline at 703-248-5160 (TTY 711), option 1. Customers can also use the Recycle Coach App to make service requests. The Recycle Coach App is available on the City's Solid Waste page ( or can be downloaded to Apple/Android devices. Select Service Request > Request Bulk Pickup.

Residents have until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9 to request a special collection pickup for Wednesday, July 10. The deadline to schedule a Wednesday, July 17 pickup is noon on Tuesday, July 16.

Items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on Wednesday. Depending on the types of material set out, several different trucks may be assigned to collect your materials.

Items that are eligible for special bulk collection with waived fees include:

  • Furniture
  • Household Appliances
  • Rugs
  • Other items too large or heavy to fit into a trash container.

Solid waste from any work done by a contractor may not be included with special collections. Contractors must arrange for the removal of solid waste or contact a private company to make alternative collection and disposal arrangements. We are unable to collect the following items:

  • Bricks, concrete, concrete blocks, rocks, stone
  • Construction debris, such as dry wall
  • Contractor trash or yard waste
  • Dirt, sod, sand, railroad ties
  • Asbestos
  • Hazardous waste
  • Paint cans with wet paint
  • Tires

Special bulk collection pick-ups scheduled for after Wednesday, July 17 will incur the normal fee ($75 per two cubic yards of material.  The appliance collection fee is $30 per appliance.)

Brush collection fees are not waived. Brush should still be placed in paper yard debris bags with yellow collection stickers. Collection of unbundled brush still incurs a fee and requires a special bulk collection request.

Federal Emergency Declaration
In the event of damaging storms, the city manager may consider waiving the bundled brush policy if a Federal Emergency is declared. A Federal Emergency Declaration enables the City to recoup costs associated with unbundled brush pick up and tonnage fees associated with disposal.

The day following a large storm, the homepage of the City website and the Solid Waste Hotline (703-248-5160, option 5) will contain information regarding brush fees and whether or not they apply. If the policy is not waived, call for a special bulk collection ($75 per 2 cubic yards of material) or self-haul material, for a fee, to the Fairfax County Transfer Station:
4618 W. Ox Road
Fairfax, VA 22030
